Dr. Margarita Olivares earned her BA degree in general sciences from the University of Puerto Rico’s Rio Piedras Campus in San Juan, where she was regularly on the dean’s list. During her junior and senior years, Dr. Olivares participated in the Minority Access to Research Careers Honors Program; with that support, she completed a research project each year and presented her findings at professional conferences.
Dr. Olivares then attended the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, also in San Juan, where she graduated magna cum laude. While there, she received honors for her rotations in obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, radiology, psychiatry, and internal medicine. In 2001, she began her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center; she served as administrative chief resident in 2004-2005. At graduation, she earned the award for the best research study, which investigated the effect of local anesthetic on pain after Cesarean section.
Before joining the faculty at St. Luke’s and Roosevelt Hospitals in August of 2007, Dr. Olivares worked in private practice with the Norwich Ob-Gyn Group in Connecticut. She has professional affiliations with the American Urogynecological Society, The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Medical Association, and the Asociación de Médicos Graduados de Puerto Rico. Dr. Olivares is interested in all aspects of obstetrics and gynecology; she supports labor and birth in Roosevelt’s special Birthing Center, as a patient option in low-risk deliveries; and se habla español.
