Dr. Teaiwa-Rutherford graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in biology from Santa Clara University in 1998. She then earned her medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and then received residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. She served as administrative chief resident during her final year of training in 2005-2006.
As a native of Fiji, in the Pacific Islands, Dr. Teaiwa has a long-term interest in international-health activism. While in medical school, she served for two years as chair of the International Health Organization. The group recovered medical equipment from Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, organized a benefit concert, and used the proceeds to send the equipment to developing countries. She also returned to California during 1999, to work with the Pacific Islander Outreach Program conducting a health needs assessment of the Polynesian community.
Dr. Teaiwa is eligible for board certification in obstetrics and gynecology, and is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology. Her clinical interests span all aspects of the field.
