Dr. Shoma Datta earned her BS in biology and her medical doctorate in an accelerated, 7-year program at the College of New Jersey and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. During her 4 years of medical school, she researched placental molecular transport systems in diabetic pregnancies resulting in publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Dr. Datta remained actively involved in her class and received an Alumni Association Award for Academic Achievement.
During her obstetrics and gynecology residency at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutes, Dr. Datta developed a keen interest in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, that is, laparoscopy and hysteroscopy. Such surgery utilizes small cameras and specialized instruments to operate within the abdomen, pelvis, and uterus, thus avoiding large incisions and allowing for fast recovery. She participated in research on newly developed gynecologic laparoscopic surgical techniques and presented this data nationally. Upon graduation from her residency program, she was named the outstanding laparoscopic surgeon of her class by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons and received the resident achievement award in laparoscopic procedures from the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL).
After residency, Dr. Datta continued her training in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery during a one year AAGL fellowship program at Mount Sinai Medical Center under the supervision of laparoscopic pioneer Dr. Farr Nezhat. During this time, she gained extensive operative experience in complex cases of uterine fibroids, endometriosis, and other pelvic pathology. In addition, Dr. Datta also gained extensive training on the Da Vinci robotic surgery system. A number of laparoscopic and robotic surgical outcome studies completed by their team during this time have been accepted for presentation at national conferences and have been submitted for publication.
In addition to her strong clinical interest and training in laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Datta is interested in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology. She is fluent in Bengali and Spanish as well as English. She is board eligible in obstetrics and gynecology.
