Dr. Acholonu received his BA in computer science from Columbia University, where he was president of the Columbia College Class of 1996 and captain of the Columbia University Lacrosse Team. Following graduation, Dr. Acholonu spent three years teaching computer science and coaching lacrosse and volleyball at Miss Porter’s School in Farmington, Connecticut. He then earned his doctorate in medicine at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. Dr. Acholonu received residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, where he developed a special interest in minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery. The department supported his attendance at workshops on laparoscopic surgery and on the da Vinci Robot. Both skills increase the ability to remove uterine fibroids and surgically treat other gynecologic conditions without a major incision. At graduation, Dr. Acholoni was named the outstanding laparoscopic surgeon of his class by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons. He is a junior fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of the American Medical Society. He is interested in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology, and he is board eligible in the specialty.
