Uchenna Acholonu Jr, MD, is an experienced, board-certified physician who sees patients for all routine gynecologic care and testing, and treats a full range of non-cancerous gynecologic problems. He has special training in the latest surgical techniques that avoid a major incision whenever possible.

During his residency in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Dr. Acholonu first developed his special interest in minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery. The department supported his attendance at workshops on laparoscopic surgery and on the da Vinci Robot. Both skills increase the ability to remove uterine fibroids and surgically treat other gynecologic conditions without a major incision. At graduation, Dr. Acholonu was named the outstanding laparoscopic surgeon of his class by the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

After graduation, Dr. Acholonu accepted a faculty position with the department and practiced for 3 years as an attending obstetrician and gynecologist. In the 2010-2011 academic year, Dr. Acholonu completed a fellowship in minimally-invasive gynecologic surgery in our department. This further equipped him to treat uterine fibroids, endometriosis, benign pelvic masses and various other gynecologic conditions via a minimally invasive approach. On returning to private practice in 2011, he elected to focus on gynecology only, and does not see obstetrics patients. He is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and a member of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, and the American Medical Society.
