Sandy Woods, CNM, has been providing couples and families with safe, individualized obstetric care at Roosevelt Hospital continuously for over 30 years. Her vibrant career here began in 1976, when she became a core member of the first autonomous private midwifery service in the United States, Roosevelt Midwifery Practice. As part of the agency, Sandy was instrumental in the growth of trends that have altered the practice of maternity care: increased choice and flexibility in style of labor, homelike birthing rooms that are conducive to this philosophy, full participation of family members at birth, fathers' presence during cesarean births, and rooming-in of newborns with the family. Roosevelt Midwifery Practice became Midwifery Services, Inc., in 1984; Sandy and the agency continued to provide sensitive maternity care and routine gynecologic care to women. And in 1996, Sandy and the midwifery agency played a major role when Roosevelt Hospital became the first in New York City to establish an in-hospital birth center. Sandy established her current professional partnership with Jacques Moritz, MD in 2006, when Midwifery Services, Inc. closed its doors. She continues to attend births in the Roosevelt Hospital Birthing Center and in the Labor and Delivery Suite.
“My focus is on providing couples and families with continuous care during pregnancy, labor, delivery, and beyond,” says Sandy. “In my practice, husbands are usually as involved as the wife; rarely do you see one without the other. Whether you labor in the Birthing Center or in Roosevelt’s Labor and Delivery Suite, my first priority is to be there with you, empowering you to choose the style of labor you find most comfortable and most positive.”
