When Shara Frederick, LM, CM, MS, graduated with her master of science degree in midwifery from SUNY Downstate Medical Center, in 2016, she received the faculty’s Nancy Moley Positivity Award, given to “the student who demonstrates a extraordinary positive approach to midwifery, to clinical experience, to learning, and to interpersonal relations.”
It was the capstone on a long career of preparation to be a midwife.

Ms. Frederick was a labor support doula from 2004 through 2016, providing continuous support and practical education throughout pregnancy and postpartum for hundreds of clients throughout New York City. In addition, she was a childbirth educator from 2007 through 2016. Her training for these roles included numerous courses at the Childbirth Association of Metropolitan New York; the Spinning Babies With Gail Tully workshop; and the Rebozzo Technique Workshop for Childbirth Professionals, among others.
She is certified as a midwife by the American Midwifery Certification Board; in basic life support by the American Heart Association; in neonatal resuscitation by the Neonatal Resuscitation Program; and as a childbirth educator by Lamaze International.
