New: The Obstetric Birthing Simulator

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has recently acquired an obstetric birthing simulator for the sole purpose of preparing, educating and evaluating obstetric residents in the management of rare but life-threatening labor and delivery scenarios. The simulator is comprised of a life-sized mannequin of a pregnant woman connected to a computer-operated, motorized system that can create standardized and unique delivery-related scenarios. Participants in the simulation exercises are observed performing the necessary delivery maneuvers and other essential steps, such as calling for the appropriate assistance during emergent situations. In addition, the simulator’s computer has interactive self-teaching programs on topics including ultrasound and pelvic anatomy. The obstetric birthing simulator is our latest tool in the ongoing evaluation of our housestaff across the six competencies mandated by the Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics-Gynecology and the ACGME.
